- Main Challenge: The homeowners wanted a pool, but their backyard was small and narrow with near neighbours on either side. They were worried about finding enough room to meet the pool setback standards and were unaware of how to go about the council approval process for a small block.
Homeowners Goal
The homeowners’ goal was to convert their modest backyard into a functional and pleasant outdoor living space where they could relax, invite family and friends and take advantage of the space available. They already had an alfresco area and wanted to put in a pool that would suit the space and create a seamless connection between outside dining and relaxing. While the land is tight and adjacent residences are close, they envisioned a garden that felt spacious, modern and usable all year round.
They wanted a pool to cool down from the scorching summer months, relax after work and spend quality time with the family on the weekends. Their aim was to design a functional, low-maintenance, outdoor hideaway that provided lifestyle benefits and visual interest, while still being roomy and inviting.
The Challenge
The homeowners wanted a pool but their backyard was small and narrow with adjoining residences near to the boundary fences on either side. They were worried that the limited space would make it tough to add a pool and still have a usable outdoor area for daily living and entertainment.
In addition to space issues, they were uncertain if their property could meet the needed pool setback and compliance regulations. The clearance process with the council also appeared daunting as they were not aware of the legislation, documentation and approvals required to establish a pool on a compact residential block. Their primary goal was to create a solution that would utilise the available space but also ensure that the project could be approved and delivered without additional delay.
Our Solution
- After assessing the site and the homeowners’ goals, we advised a 5.2m x 3.0m rectangular fibreglass plunge pool to make the most of the backyard space while yet keeping a functional outdoor arrangement. The pool was thoughtfully located to combine with the existing outdoor living space, enabling a smooth flow between entertaining, relaxing and outdoor living. Its sleek form allows you plenty of area to chill off and enjoy the water while still maintaining critical space around the pool.
- We responded to the homeowners’ concerns regarding approvals by handling them through the council approval process from initial planning to compliance requirements. This required looking at pool setback requirements, getting the paperwork together, making sure the pool fencing and safety laws were met, as well as helping with the relevant council and certifier procedures. We were able to address these critical approvals factors early in the project to remove much of the uncertainty and ensure the pool design could progress easily and quickly.
- Light paving, frameless glass fencing and landscaping have been meticulously thought out to soften the boundary fences and improve privacy to match the final pool. Together, these features create a modern resort-style environment that makes the backyard feel bigger, more open and more welcoming.
Installation Process
1. Site Evaluation and Council Approval
We started by looking at the property, analysing access, size and compliance requirements. Our team helped the homeowners with the council clearance procedure to make sure the pool design adhered to all the necessary setback, fencing and safety laws prior to the start of construction.
2. Digging and Pool Installation
Once we had the approvals, we prepared the site and commenced the excavation works. The plunge pool, constructed of fibreglass, measured 5.2m x 3.0m and was then carefully transported and positioned with exact levelling to provide a secure and durable construction.
3. Landscaping & Pool Decks
Once the pool shell was erected we finished the surrounds off with light coloured pavement, frameless glass pool fencing and planted garden beds. These characteristics were developed to optimise the feeling of spaciousness, and to improve seclusion and visual attractiveness.
4. Final Finishes & Delivery
The last step was to connect and test the pool equipment, balance the water and conduct a quality inspection. Once everything was in place, we turned the finished pool over to the homeowners and provided them with instructions on how to operate, maintain and care for it on an ongoing basis.
Final Result / Outcome
The Transformation
The outcome has transformed a modest, underutilised backyard into a modern outdoor hideaway that feels much bigger and more efficient. Although the house has a compact footprint and surrounding residences are in close proximity, the well-planned pool arrangement, wide sightlines and integrated landscaping provided a vast and inviting setting that maximised on every square metre available.
Everyday Enjoyment
The new 5.2m x 3.0m fibreglass plunge pool gives the residents a practical spot to cool down on summer days, unwind after work and spend quality time with family and friends. By linking the pool seamlessly with the existing outdoor space area, the backyard has now become one homogeneous leisure area for both everyday life and social occasions.
Lasting Benefits
Most importantly, the homeowners were able to realise their aim of creating a low-maintenance outdoor leisure area without compromising precious backyard space. The plunge pool, frameless glass fencing, light colored pavers and well thought out landscaping all combine to give a resort-like feel, adding visual appeal, functionality and value to the property for the long term.
Client Review
Because of the limited space and the rules, we really didn't think it would be possible to put a pool in our backyard. The team helped us through the whole process and designed a space that was efficient in every way. The finished pool looks great, goes great with our outdoor living space, and has totally changed how we use our backyard. We're thrilled with the outcome.

Why This Pool Design Worked For This Property
The 5.2m x 3.0m plunge pool was the ideal size for the tight footprint of the property. It had all the pleasures of a pool and still left plenty of room for outdoor gatherings, planting, and simple movement around the backyard.
By adding the pool next to the existing alfresco area, the transition from the dining, entertaining and relaxing zones was seamless. This helps combine individual outdoor elements into one seamless outdoor living space.
With frameless glass fencing, light paving and clear sightlines the backyard was not made to feel contained. These design choices also made the area feel bigger and more open than it was.
Landscaping was carefully chosen to soften the surrounding boundary fences and create more privacy from adjoining properties. The landscape offered visual interest while yet retaining an open and inviting feel.
The tiny fibreglass plunge pool requires less continuous maintenance, water and cleaning than a larger swimming pool. That means homeowners get to spend more time enjoying their backyard and less time maintaining it.
